About Me

© Hatty Pedder

Hello there, I am Hatty Pedder, and I’m an artist living in Dubai.

‘Dubai?’ you say. ‘How exotic’.

‘Well,’ I say, ‘it is rather’.

After all, Dubai is strange in the best ways possible. For example, it’s the only country in the world where a person is employed to pass you the ticket from the parking lot ticket-machine, directly into your hand (just in case you might have to stretch a bit). It’s the only country in the world where the ‘Hells Angels’ gangs on Harley Davidsons have ironed Versace scarves swaying in the desert breeze. And it’s also the only place where you can DHL your child’s lunchbox to school when they’ve left it at home. Yes. You’ve guessed it folks. That person was me.

The whole place is utterly fascinating. There are the golden bikinied tourists, the medallion studded businessmen, the middle-aged expat British chaps, who have been here too long, and think they can carry off Gucci from head to toe... The glitterati, those that think they are the glitterati, and everyone else besides.

Yes, every single person living in this extraordinary, colourful and often eccentric country acts as a muse for my art.

So that’s exactly what this blog is about; me (the artist) reporting on the people in the midst of the unrepentant social whirl that is Dubai - inking out the diverse faces and characters that catch my eye, and imagination. Through art, I shall be able to present to you a unique and humorous, yet realistic artistic impression of this country on a weekly basis.

‘Why?’ you ask.

‘Just follow along my darlings, and all will be revealed....’

Fantastic! I LOVE this blog! Can you do some funny sketches of the mums on the school run too? You know the type – the Porsche Cayenne driving mums, tottering along six inch Jimmy Choos and white cigarette Gucci pants, an iPhone in one hand, a Birkin in the other while the maid herds the children through the gates, carrying all the PE kits, lunch boxes and school bags… Looking forward to more fab pictures soon. Keep it up!
